Scorsese and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto drew inspiration from painters from the Baroque period when determining the color palettes of the film, using blue and cyan tones at the beginning and later a golden-yellow hue, which in Prieto's opinion, gave the film a sense of progression in color.

While Prieto shot the landscapes and the actors using film stock, he resorted to digital when it came to the night scenes. Prieto found some difficulties when shooting the film.

With the weather constantly changing, he would have inconsistencies in terms of lighting that he solved by filming some sequences at night time that would be lit for either dusk or sunset.

To simulate moonlight for many of the night scenes, Prieto used a rig of blue-green lights called the "UFO" and hung them on a crane. Much of the soundtrack includes ambient nocturnal and ocean sounds repeated over several of the tracks.

An extended track of 12 minutes titled "Meditation" is included as the leading track on the soundtrack release.

Scorsese brokered several distribution deals when he attended the Cannes Film Festival. In August , Scorsese stated the film would be completed in October, and the release of the film depended on Paramount.

The world premiere of the film was held at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome on November 29, followed by a special screening the next day in Vatican City.

The film was released on Blu-ray and DVD on March 28, , with a slightly earlier release date of March 14, , set for digital streaming of the film.

Deadline Hollywood attributed the film's low opening to its minute runtime and lack of major award nominations to create buzz.

The site's critical consensus reads, " Silence ends Martin Scorsese's decades-long creative quest with a thoughtful, emotionally resonant look at spirituality and human nature that stands among the director's finest works.

Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert. It puts you through hell with no promise of enlightenment, only a set of questions and propositions, sensations and experiences This is not the sort of film you 'like' or 'don't like.

Several reviewers such as Justin Chang and Mark Kermode emphasized Scorsese's collaboration with his production crew and with his actors as contributing to the film's quality.

Writing for the Los Angeles Times , Justin Chang called the film an "anguished masterwork" for Scorsese stating: "Working with such sterling past collaborators as editor Thelma Schoonmaker , production designer Dante Ferretti and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto , Scorsese has done more than resurrect a vision of feudal Japan As a smiling, silver-tongued interpreter, Tadanobu Asano is a superb foil to the inquisitor, Inoue, played with fly-swatting menace by a wheedling Issey Ogata ".

Apart from the narrative qualities of the film, the filmmaking was also praised for the depth and thoroughness of its thematic content. Some reviewers cited the legacy aspects of the film for Scorsese and compared Scorsese to iconic director Ingmar Bergman.

Ty Burr of The Boston Globe said, "The movie's being promoted as the third in the director's unofficial trilogy of faith, after The Last Temptation of Christ and Kundun , and it feels like a self-conscious masterpiece, a summing-up from a filmmaker who, at 74, may be thinking of his legacy.

The film also garnered criticism. Writing for Variety , Peter Debruge found major flaws with the film, writing, "Though undeniably gorgeous, it is punishingly long, frequently boring, and woefully unengaging at some of its most critical moments.

It is too subdued for Scorsese-philes, too violent for the most devout, and too abstruse for the great many moviegoers who such an expensive undertaking hopes to attract.

Perhaps that leap toward the devout is needed to savour it fully—and I found I couldn't make it. Silence was listed on numerous American critics' top ten lists for In addition to other competitive awards for which the film received accolades, the American Film Institute selected Silence as one of its ten Movies of the Year.

The first version of the script he attempted to write with his co-writer Jay Cocks managed to get only midway through the material before being set aside as insufficiently sensitive to the spiritual aspects of the book.

It took Scorsese many years to envision a way to approach an accurate and informed filming of the scenes, involving spiritual transitions among the actors in the film.

Caesar A. Montevecchio of the University of Notre Dame published a theological assessment of the spiritual themes in the film concentrating on the act of priestly renunciation depicted towards the end stating: "This climactic scene of Rodrigues trampling the fumi-e makes clear that Silence is as much about the object of Christian faith as it is the experience of that faith.

As ambient and live sound are washed out entirely, Rodrigues hears the voice of Christ telling him to trample, that it was to be trampled upon that Christ came into the world.

The object of faith becomes a Christ who is a hero of pity, who takes up the weakness and suffering of humankind as his cross, rather than a hero of triumphant resolve.

Aaron Baker in his book A Companion to Martin Scorsese discussed aspects of the theological themes in the film stating that: "According to an analysis of the film by the Japanese-American theologian Fumitaka Masuoka, it pivots on the idea that the silence of God is in fact the message of God, being not the silence of nihil , or 'nothingness', but rather 'the "accompaniment" for the forsaken and the suffering', and the concomitant silence of Christians quietly hoping for salvation.

Implicit here is what Matsuoka terms 'an element of uncertainty', a possibility that the nihil of emptiness, meaninglessness, and hopelessness will eventually prevail.

It doesn't help that the film is way too slow, long, self important and not as moving as it should be.

A pretty exhausting experience, while the images linger on, the emotions do not. Jens S Super Reviewer. Oct 04, One shudders to think what Mel Gibson would have done with this material, and yet one sort of misses his pious derangement.

The Japanese cast is impeccable, but it's too soon after 'Hacksaw Ridge' for another missionary role for Garfield, and a script heavy with VO, phony accents and moral exposition reduces him to a sobbing mess.

With his dark, fanatical face, Adam Driver would have been far better in the lead, and casting Neeson in yet another thankless Sensei part felt easy and boring.

In the end, the film is about what you see, and the tableaux and the soundscape save the day. At three hours, it flows by in a heaven of photography, and even the gruesome tortures seem distanced and rarified.

Charles B Super Reviewer. Jul 13, Martin Scorsese is, undoubtedly, one of the great American filmmakers. For over 40 years he has been the guy that has wanted to wash the scum off the streets; claimed it's better to be King for a night than schmuck for a lifetime; advised us to never to rat on our friends and to go home and get our fuckin' shine boxes.

These classic cinematic moments aside, he's also known for the occasional deviation from the norm of his criminal outings and delivered films with deep religious themes; The Last Temptation of Christ, Kundun and now Silence completes his unofficial religious trilogy.

Plot: In 17th century Japan - at a time when Catholicism was outlawed - two Portugese Jesuit priests, Father Rodrigues Andrew Garfield and Father Garupe Adam Driver travel to the foreign land in search of their mentor, Father Ferreira Liam Neeson who's lack of correspondence and silence has led to rumours of his apostasy.

In order to find the truth behind his disappearence, the two missionaries decide to enter dangerous territories where Christians are tortured and killed, putting their own faith to the ultimate test.

Having a religious faith has always been a recurring theme throughout Scorsese's filmography. Despite Catholicism predominantly being the focus, he did embrace the Buddhist philosophy when he delivered the fascinating saga, Kundun in With Silence, Marty takes us back to the guilt-ridden suffering that his Catholic faith has, seemingly, brought him.

It's clear from the opening of this film that Scorsese wants to go big and the truth is, he goes very big. This is a film on a grand scale. Not just in terms of visuals but in terms of its dense and thought provoking themes.

For all it's religious rhetoric, though, it manages to avoid preaching. And that's what I respect most about Scorsese's endeavours.

There's a deep commentary on the importance of different cultures and the influences they have on belief systems, psyche's and human nature.

This is a thought provoking examination on the desperation of faith and greater need to believe that it will prevent suffering in life and provide absolution.

Alas, it may lead to nothing. Some people's faith might stand strong while others will be led on a journey of self-discovery and an eventual reluctance to tread a preordained path.

Scorsese ponders hard on whether faith has any substance or tangible affinity with a supreme or celestial being.

Despite being raised Catholic myself, I personally think it's wholly illogical and such a ridiculous notion that it has become a socially accepted form of madness.

Granted, if not take literally, it can provide some comfort in the vast enigma of our existence but I prefer to approach life in accordance with science and logic and, like some of the characters in this story, I had to turn my back on blind acceptance.

Organised religion may take the place of Coppola's tribal spiritualism but this is no less an existential journey than Cpt. Willard's search for Col.

Their search for their mentor Neeson, who has abandoned his faith and succumbed to eastern beliefs, captures the same intrigue and wonder that Apocalypse Now possessed in terms of a once devoted man now choosing a completely different and unexplained path.

And what right does one's beliefs have over another? This is the crux of the film and Scorsese poses this crux without ever having to be forceful.

He lets it smoulder and the events and beliefs explain themselves. Throughout this journey, Scorsese and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto conjure up very striking and haunting imagery.

They don't shy away from depicting human suffering but they also look at the beauty of our world and look aghast at how we "under the watchful eye of God", can commit atrocities to one another.

This is, somewhat, of a demanding film and it requires a certain patience but if you give it your commitment, it's a thoroughly rewarding experience.

Scorsese lets loose on a subject that is very close to his heart. We've seen religious symbolism and references throughout his work over the years but none have been as potent as his work is here.

Mark Walker. Mark W Super Reviewer. Principal photography began in Toronto in September According to the film's production notes, the creatures are named "Vesps" after the Spanish avispa , meaning wasps.

Director John R. Leonetti said that research was done into other cave creatures in order to design the Vesps.

A lot of scientific research went into the design, the creation, and the computer animation of the creatures, right down to the detail of every joint, every vessel, and every move they make.

The site's critics' consensus reads: " The Silence has nothing new to say with a derivative premise and placid pacing -- even a wasted Stanley Tucci is unable to elevate the stodgy material a decibel above dreadful.

Scott Tobias, reviewing for The New York Times , called The Silence "niche-targeted dreck" where "only a quality cast and more generous production values can cover up the shoddy stitching".

Tobias said despite the film's depiction of "a grand evolutionary struggle A horror movie needs stakes, and you just never feel them here.

Hearing actress Kiernan Shipka plays the lead character, a deaf teenager who battles monsters. Leonetti said in an interview, "She learned to sign for the film, and now she's flawless, like she's been signing her entire life.

She seems to have an almost innate sense of what it's like being a deaf person. The Silence was compared to A Quiet Place , a horror film with a similar premise.

While The Silence was acquired by a distributor, it was not released in theaters and was later picked up by Netflix.

Quartz ' s Adam Epstein said while the parallel productions were coincidental, he compared The Silence to mockbusters low-budget films that exploit blockbusters , highlighting that one of its screenwriters, Shane Van Dyke , wrote several scripts for The Asylum , a studio that specializes in mockbusters.

Menta said The Silence was started before the invasion while A Quiet Place was set fully after the invasion.

She noted the criticism of The Silence for having a hearing actor as a deaf character and highlighted its additional elements, a teen romance and a religious cult.

Writing for Comic Book Resources , Renaldo Matadeen contrasted The Silence from A Quiet Place , writing, "There are quite a few plot threads which make it clear the Netflix movie is far from a rip-off and is, in fact, it's [sic] own thing.

He found the creatures "totally different" as well as the times compared to the creature invasion. While both films have "a somewhat similar format" in families trying to survive the creatures, "In The Silence , we get interference from external segments of mankind via the Hushed.
